GUI for Windows NSLookup to get DNS details for a domain"
A review by John

Each website is reachable through an IP, but some servers are translating these IPs into domain names. DNS is a system which translates domain names to IP addresses so as to enable browsers to load Internet resources. DNS is popularly known as the phonebook of the Internet.

As a network administrator you may want to recover your lost DNS records, to do this you need a dedicated application that can help you retrieve it. Though a DNS retrieval system has been bundled with your Windows OS, which is NSLookup, it is lacking in design and functionalities.

The application offers a user-friendly, intuitive and comprehensive user interface which is unlike the dull command-line console offered by NSLookup.

It supports various DNS record types:

  • MX
  • NS
  • A
  • SRV
  • AAAA
  • SOA

The application allows you to perform reverse DNS lookup, that is, you can configure it to show a PTR record for each IP address.

You can enter your network default DNS server or any other one, and you can also input multiple domains. The application will provide information on the domains which consists of the domain name, hostname, IP address and record type.

Overall, the application is a graphical and more functional DNS retrieval tool than NSLookup.

DNSDataView is licensed as freeware for Windows 32 bit and 64 bit operating system without restrictions. It is in traceroute category and is available to all software users as a free download.
